| Both
Level I (grades 4 & 5) and Level II (grades 6, 7 &
8) will begin playoff at 9:00 a.m. Please plan to arrive at
contest site at least 30 to 45 minutes early in order to
check in. The Level I & Level II competition will occur
simultaneously. Estimated total time for all rounds is 3
hours. Between five and ten contestants will be seated at
each table for Round 1. Each contestant will be provided
with a pencil and several answer sheets. A proctor with
assistant will preside at each table. Groupings for Round
1 will be determined by a random drawing by the team teacher
or coach and will not be changed. |
| |
| Round 1
will proceed as follows: |
| 1) |
the
proctor will draw a card, announce the numbers on
the card from top left to top right and proceed down
the card. The contestants should write the numbers
down on the answer sheet as they are read; |
| 2) |
appropriate
number cubes will be rolled to decide the target
number which will be announced; |
| 3) |
then
the game starts. |
|
| |
| Each
contestant writes a true equation using the 3 numbers from
any horizontal, vertical or diagonal row of the card numbers
the proctor just announced to equal the target number. The
contestant to write his/her equation first will then raise
his/her hand holding the sheet of paper. At this point,
all other contestants must stop writing immediately and put
pencils down on the table. |
| |
| The
proctor will check the answer. If it is incorrect, play will
continue immediately with the same card and the same target
number. The contestant with the incorrect answer will be
prohibited from further play of that card only. The first
contestant to submit a correct answer wins that card. *
|
| *
During the contest, if 2 or more contestants
raise hands and
submit the correct answer at the same time, they will all
get a card. |
| |
| If no
contestant can get a correct equation after one minute, a
new target number will be determined for the same card. If
no contestant can get a correct equation after one minute of
trying with the second target number, that card will be
thrown out. |
| |
| The
two(2) contestants at each table who wins the most cards
will advance to the second round. The first contestant to
successfully win more than half of the cards will
automatically advance, (for example: if 10 cards played, the
contestant should win 6 cards) and at that point will
discontinue play. The remaining contestants will continue to
compete for the second chance
to advance to round 2. Ties will be broken by playing one or
more additional cards until a winner is determined. Normally
10 cards will be played per round, and the play will stop as
soon as the winners of the table are determined. |
|
|
| Round 2/Round
3 will be
pre-determined by the total number of contestants enrolled
in the competition. The round (s) will proceed the same as
Round 1. The number of rounds and the number of winners per
round to advance during competition will be announced prior
to the beginning of contest. |
| |
| The Final
Round,
winners (3 per level) will be determined by the total number
of cards they've won. The
Awards Ceremony will follow completion of the Final Round. |
| |
| Please
note these rules of play: |
| 1. |
Be
aware of the order of operations. If you have
multiplication or division in the middle of any
equation without correct use of parentheses, the
proctor checking your answer will perform the
multiplication or division before doing any addition
or subtraction. Either "." or "x"
can be accepted as the multiplication symbol. Any
symbol or number considered illegible by the proctor
will not be accepted. |
| 2. |
| You
may reach the target number by means of two or
more equations, but the equations must be
linked. |
|
|
| Example:
if you choose 2, 9, 4 and
the target number is 26. |
|
|
| This
is acceptable: |
|
(
9 + 4 ) x 2 = 26 |
|
Parentheses
first! |
| |
|
|
|
or 9 + 4 =
13 13 x 2=26 |
|
(or
2 x 13 = 26) |
|
|
|
This
is NOT
acceptable: |
|
9
+ 4 x 2 = 26 (not equal to 26) |
|
or
9 + 4 =13 x 2 = 26 |
|
|
| 3. |
Numbers
on the card may not be used as exponents. |
| 4. |
Once
an equation is submitted to the proctor, it may not be
altered. |
| 5. |
Decisions
of the proctors are final. |
| 6. |
Any
contestant who looks over at another contestant's work
will be disqualified immediately. |
| 7. |
Contestants
are expected to refrain from talking during the
contest and any contestant who becomes rude or
argumentative will disqualified immediately. |
| 8. |
Contestants
not advancing to the next round may leave the
premises; however we encourage all contestants to stay
seated quietly until the contest is over and prizes
have been awarded. All participants who remain at the
end of the award ceremony will be given the
opportunity to enter a drawing for prizes. |
